Today, we celebrate and thank all care workers and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring fair, safe, and empowering conditions for their work!
October 29 is the International Day of Care and Support. The General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed this International Day to emphasise the need to invest in the care economy, and the need to create robust, resilient and gender-responsive, disability-inclusive and age-sensitive care and support systems. This decision calls for the full respect for human rights with a view to recognising, reducing, valuing and redistributing unpaid care and domestic work and support.
Today, we recognize the vital role that care plays in sustaining our economies and societies. Whether performed for pay or provided informally within families and communities, care work underpins health, well-being, and social cohesion across the world. According to the report of the International Labour Organisation on Care Work and Care Jobs (https://www.ilo.org/publications/major-publications/care-work-and-care-jobs-future-decent-work), care work around the world continues to be marked by a lack of benefits and protections, inadequate pay or no compensation at all, and vulnerability to physical and mental harm. It is crucial to find solutions to improve the situation of care workers.
The CARES project focuses on the improvement of the lives of social care professionals by promoting inclusion, mental health, and professional growth. Recognizing the demanding nature of care work, CARES aims to empower those in the sector through targeted training, resources, and support. At the heart of CARES is a Capacity-Building Program designed to strengthen the digital skills and soft skills of care workers to support their everyday work. The Capacity-Building Program will be available on a multilingual platform as a result of the project. To promote well-being, CARES will also provide two Self-learning Handbooks focused on mental health, physical activity, and nutrition. You can get more information about the results and details of the CARES project by reading the latest news about this project on our website.
Care workers sustain our communities and economies. On this International Day of Care and Support, we thank them for their dedication and emphasize the need for fair, safe, and empowering conditions in which they can thrive.
